Galway City Sailing Club Shines in RTÉ Documentary
Galway City Sailing Club is proud to announce its contribution to Scéalta na Lochanna, a captivating 6-part Irish language documentary currently airing on RTÉ 1. This beautifully crafted series celebrates the natural beauty, history, and culture of Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib, while also exploring the vibrant communities and delicate ecology that surround these iconic lakes.
One episode of particular interest is Episode 3, which airs on Monday, 27th January 2025, and focuses on Community and Lough Corrib. This episode highlights the Cong Galway Sailing Race 2024, Ireland’s oldest inland sailing race, showcasing the spirit and determination of those who participate in this unique event.
Spanning a challenging 30-nautical-mile course from Lisloughrey Pier to Galway City, the Cong Galway Sailing Race is a true test of skill and endurance. Over the years, the race has evolved into a remarkable collaboration between several local clubs, including Corrib Rowing and Yacht Club, Galway Bay Sailing Club, Galway City Sailing Club, Cumann Seoltóireachta an Spidéil, and the Galway Hooker Sailing Club. Completing this historic race is not just an achievement; it’s a celebration of the shared passion for sailing and the strong bonds within Galway’s sailing community.
The filmmakers of Scéalta na Lochanna were full of praise for the camaraderie, cooperation, and warm hospitality shown by all the clubs involved in organising the event. They extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a role in making the race a success, from pre-race preparations to the day itself. The team expressed how deeply impressed they were with the collaborative spirit and the welcome they received, which they believe is beautifully captured in the finished episode.
Scéalta na Lochanna is produced by Strident Media for RTÉ, with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcasting Fund (ILBF). It also highlights the incredible contribution of Galway’s vibrant sailing community, which continues to showcase the best of what the region has to offer.
