Annual Regatta & BBQ – Featuring ‘Round the Buoys’ & ‘The Rabbit Run’ Sailing Races

The biggest day in our sailing calendar is back — and you won’t want to miss it! On Saturday 20 September, Galway City Sailing Club is throwing open the doors (and hoisting the sails) for our Annual Regatta & BBQ Picnic.
It’s open to:
- All our club members
- Families of young sailors from our 2025 junior courses
- This summer’s brilliant sailing instructors
- Friends from local sailing clubs
So, round up your crew and get ready for a day of sailing, sunshine (we hope) and sizzling BBQ food.
Two courses – Double the fun
Two sailing adventures will run side by side, so you can pick your challenge:
- Round the Buoys – Juniors and adults racing together under PY handicap. Expect four short, sharp tactical races where every mark rounding counts.
- Round the Islands – “The Rabbit Run” – A longer pursuit race around the Leverets, Hare and Rabbit Islands. For adults and confident juniors looking for a bit more adventure.
Schedule for the day
- 12:00–13:00 – Check-in at the clubhouse
- 13:00 – Competitors’ briefing in the dinghy yard
- 13:30 – Earliest warning flag for the first Round the Buoys race
- 14:00 – Earliest warning flag for the Pursuit Race
- 16:00-ish – Back ashore for the picnic and BBQ at the clubhouse
Prizes & bragging rights
- 1st and 2nd place in Round the Buoys
- Rabbit Run Pursuit Race – The first club member home will take custody of our prestigious Perpetual Trophy* for 2025.
*This beautiful piece was handcrafted by a talented stonemason who also happens to be a much-valued club member. It was generously presented to the club and gratefully received.
Entry fees
- €20 per sailor-owned boat
- €25 for a club-owned boat
(Fees cover safety boat fuel plus a beef or veggie burger for each sailor and their family.)
What to bring
- Your own table settings and cups
- Picnic sides and drinks to go with the burgers
- A healthy dose of competitive spirit and a big smile
Important notes
- Regatta depends on suitable weather. Backup date: Sunday 21 September
- Please read the Notice of Race and Preliminary Sailing Instructions before you enter
- All participants agree to follow club rules
