Newsletter – June 29th 2012

Hello everybody,

We had a very good evening’s sailing yesterday. A Force 3 westerly with rain

which cleared nicely as we got out on the water from the beach. Thanks to

Ciaran Jordan for safety boat work and putting out the marks – Ciaran had

been working/sailing all day on Lough Atalia  practising team racing in the

GBSC RS Feva’s and needed a break! Thanks also to Kevin Finn for being the

race officer – I am told the briefing was up to aviation standards! Six

boats went out to do a 2 lap course- much to the youngsters disappointment,

and John’s, the wind died a bit but it was still a good exercise in light

wind sailing – the most difficult, especially with the tide to consider.

Good to see Seosaimh and Marcus and Micael and great to see the youngsters:

Eamonn Murphy, Seamus O’Donoghue, Joe Meaher, Kevin, Paraic and Darog who

were all out in 420s. (I think). John H and Colm and ? were in John’s Sport

14.

The enthusiasm was such that we decided to run the club sailing sessions as

normal during the Volvo week – so , yes , sailing is on tomorrow at 1300

hours (1pm), John McCole is safety boat helm , and I am looking for a

volunteer for Race Officer – only two flags!

I will send out a roster for Race Officer shortly – only one of you was

unable to volunteer from the list I sent out recently – check it if you are

not sure.

The dinghy park is half constructed and should be finished today so we will

be able to move the boats down there over the weekend and life will be much

easier – no more pulling the ancient 420 trolleys half a kilometer!. The

road is also improved and there is a hardstand close to the beach .

As a club we are providing safety and general help support to the ISA

Accessible sailing programme during the Volvo week, the orange Rigiflex will

be used for this and  Tim and Nancy, John McCole and Lauren, and John

Hendley will share out the work. The ISA have 140 bookings for this disabled

sailing programme spread over the whole week.

The Humber will be used by Ciaran Oliver, Conor, Darragh and Eoin for other

support roles during the week when we don’t need it for sailing sessions.

Access to the Club : If Lough Atalia Road to the Harbour Hotel is shut you

can get access by declaring that you are a member of Galway Sailsports Club

and the password is ‘Nancy Roe’.

Don’t forget the Junior parade of sail this Sunday from the beach- meet at

GOSC at 3.00pm – you are welcome to use the club 420’s weather permitting.

Bookings to Nancy please 0866670180 or email. Anybody else wanting to use a

420 to join in the main parade also contact me – but I suggest juniors get

first preference.

Let’s hope the weather is kind this next week,

Good sailing,

Nancy
