December 4th Newslettter
Newsletter – December 4th 2014.
Hello Member or Friend,
- The club Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday January 16th in the Cottage bar in Lower Salthill. The AGM will be followed by a social evening so please make a note in your diaries not to miss this one. More information nearer the day.
- At the AGM we will be electing the club officers for the 2015 season – please consider volunteering – the more people that help the easier it is for everyone and the more likely the club is to succeed.
- We have been awarded a grant by Galway Sports Partnership towards a programme directly aimed at getting more girls and women to join in the sailing. In the early spring we will be looking for 6 women/girls to take a powerboat course to ISA level 2 at a discounted cost. Then, later on, we will be running sailing courses for 24 women and girls. We would hope that some of the participants would come from disadvantaged schools and areas, and will be publicising the courses in DEIS schools and in the RAPID areas. If you know of anybody who would like to do the powerboat course ask them to contact me (Nancy Roe) for more information.
- The year has been very successful with adult and teenage courses run using the club Topaz dinghies and also children’s courses in the new Optibat dinghies. We have also been given some older Optibats which were surplus to Dingle Sailing Clubs requirements, and we should be able to rig six of these for use next season.
- The general club sailing is still continuing on Saturday afternoons– we have a few hardy enthusiasts! – and we have sailed every Thursday evening and Saturday during the spring and summer. It would be good if we could have some more formal sailing in the form of races – nothing too intense! – and we will be looking for volunteers to help run the racing. If you would like to get involved in the club but don’t necessarily want to sail this could be for you – non-sailors membership is only €30/yr
- Seven club boats took part in the Cong–Galway race in September – an admirable entry and a good day was had by all. Congratulations to James Rattigan and his crew who were in the prizewinners.
- Many thanks to all the club members who manned the safety boats during the year – without you there would be no club! Members also took part in safety boat training sessions provided by Ciaran Oliver of Galway Boat Charters. We hope to organize more of these courses in the New Year.
- Also in the New Year it is hoped to have a few evenings of talks/ information – any ideas welcome.
- In the meantime wishing you and your families a Very Happy Christmas .
