Galway City Sailing Club is thrilled to invite all sailors to the highly anticipated annual regatta, featuring the unique ‘The Rabbit Run’ pursuit race around Leverets Lighthouse, Hare Island, and Rabbit Island. Mark your calendars for a Saturday 12 October, 2024 and get ready for an unforgettable day of sailing, competition and camaraderie!

Open Regatta and BBQ Featuring ‘The Rabbit Run’ Pursuit Race

Sailors of all skill levels are invited to join this unique race around Galway Bay’s inner scenic landmarks off Renmore Point, including Leverets Lighthouse, Hare Island and Rabbit Island.

This open event welcomes both club members and non-members, providing a fantastic opportunity for all sailing enthusiasts to experience competitive racing in a fun and friendly environment.

The day will begin with registration from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, followed by a race briefing at 1:30 PM. The first race will commence at 2:25 PM. Following the excitement on the water, the day will conclude with a prize-giving ceremony and a BBQ as soon as the final race finishes.

The club perpetual prize will be awarded to the overall regatta winner, with additional prizes for the top three finishers, as well as for categories based on class, age group and more. There will also be novelty and spot prizes to ensure a fun and engaging event for all participants.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to the sport, the regatta promises an exciting day on the water, followed by a lively social event. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to race around these beautiful Galway landmarks.

Location: Galway City Sailing Club (Coordinates: 53°16’07″N 9°02’16″W)
Main Event: ‘The Rabbit Run’ Pursuit Race

Schedule:

  • Registration: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Briefing: 1:30 PM
  • First Gun: 2:25 PM
  • No Warning Signal After: 5:00 PM
  • Prize Giving & BBQ: ASAP after the last race

Race Information:

  1. Rules:
    • The event will adhere to The Racing Rules of Sailing 2021 to 2024.
    • The main event is a single pursuit race. Course details will be provided at the event briefing and are weather-dependent.
    • Class starts will follow specific start numbers.
    • An additional handicap race may be held at the discretion of the Race Officer.
  2. Eligibility and Entry:
    • Open to all sailors and dinghies with a PY handicap of 1400 or less.
    • Competitors will be considered temporary members of the host club for the event’s duration.
    • Entry must be completed via the online form by midnight on Thursday, October 10th. Late entries are at the club’s discretion.
    • Club boats are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis (12 Picos and 4 Argos).
  3. Fees:
    • Single Hander (Own Boat): €20
    • Double Hander (Own Boat): €25
    • Single Hander (Club Boat): €25
    • Double Hander (Club Boat): €35

Prizes:

  • Overall Perpetual Prize for the regatta winner.
  • Individual Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.
  • Additional Prizes for various categories based on class, age group, and more.
  • Novelty and Spot Prizes emphasizing fun and participation.

Important Notes:

  • Risk Statement: Participation involves inherent risks. Competitors are responsible for their safety and equipment.
  • Insurance: Each boat owner must ensure their vessel is adequately insured.
  • Photography Consent: By entering, competitors consent to being photographed or videotaped.
  • Boat Parking & Launching/Recovery: Details will be provided at registration. Ensure your launching trolley is fully serviceable and clearly marked.
