Club News From Club Secretary / PR

Hello Members and Friends,

AGM And New Committee

As you most likely know by now the AGM voted for the club name to change to Galway City Sailing Club. This will more clearly describe what our activities are – dinghy sailing at the moment, and wind surfing is there is a demand for it.

The website has been changed to, and the bank account name is changed though the account number is the same.
The amended constitution will be on the website.

Also at the AGM we welcomed Johnny Murphy as our new Commodore (title changed from Chairperson/man/woman). Nancy Roe has taken over the Secretary/PR office and John Hendley is the Sailing Officer this term.

Many thanks to all those who have served on the committee in the first two years – the club couldn’t have got underway without you and your commitment, and welcome to the new committee members.

The list of officers and ordinary committee members is on the website. Also many thanks to the members who have sailed, crewed safety boats, mended boats, waved flags, put out marker buoys, helped launch boats, transported boats from Schull, cleaned the beach, tidied the ‘hangar’,
fed us well, made hot chocolates, etc. etc.

New Sailing Season

The weather was so cold that we did not attempt to get on to the water until after Easter; and there was the important matter of the arrival of young Tom Murphy!

We have had a couple of pleasant Thursday evening sailings and a lovely Saturday afternoon last week. The nine Topaz dinghys which we are using now are proving easy to rig and good to sail for beginners and intermediates.

The six 420’s are still there to be used by the older youths and adults with some experience. Sailing time on Saturday has been changed to meet/rig 2pm and on the water by 3pm prompt – the aim is to start skills sessions/race sessions etc. 1st gun 3pm, and finish by 5pm. The on
water start for Thursday sessions is 6.30pm prompt. It helps everybody if we get there early and start on time.

Youth ISA Sailing Courses From Galway City Sailing Club

The calendar for the year will be put on the website soon, but coming up very soon are two events: The weekend of April 27/28 we will be running a Taste of Sailing/Start Sailing course for 12 to 17 year olds. This is being run under the supervision of Graham Daly, an ISA senior instructor, and will be observed by an ISA representative. Our aspiration is for the club to achieve certification as an ISA Training Centre – not as a commercial entity but in order to give weight to any courses we offer to our members or to prospective members.

In order to run this weekend we need at least six 12 to 17 year old members or friends to sign up for the course. It will cost €60 for the two days to cover the cost of the instructor, running expenses and the purchase of some necessary equipment. The application form will be emailed to you all in the next day or two.

Contact me at or text 0866670180 if you wish to register.

Please, if you can, get your youngsters to take advantage of this offer – it will make a big difference to the club if we can get ISA certification.
