Introduction To Sailing For Adult Beginners
STARTING SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2024 – MEET AT DINGHY PARK
The course offers learners with no previous knowledge the basic knowledge, sailing techniques, manoeuvres and skills to sail a sailing dinghy under the instruction of a Senior Sailing Instructor.
Price – Club Members: 160 Euro
Price – Non-Club Members 180 Euro
Duration: 16 Hours
Delivery: 4 Saturdays, 10.00 – 14.00
When: Saturday 14, 21, 28 of September & October 5th – we may need to postpone dates due to weather and will reschedule to dates in October if required.
Venue: Galway City Sailing Club (Certified Training Centre for Sailing). Meet at Dinghy Park. The dinghy park is located on the sea front, 100m on the left, down the gravel road to Dead Mans Beach. See contact page for map.
Instructor: Club Senior Instructor
Number of participants: Max. 16 learners
Objective: The course is mainly practical with a hands on approach. The learner will be able to sail the training boat in light to moderate wind conditions under the instructions of an Senior Sailing Instructor.
Syllabus: The course is an introduction for sailing a dinghy and covers essential practical and theoretical aspects of sailing. Participants need no previous knowledge in sailing.
Requirements for the course: Sailing a dinghy is a sporty activity and include confidence in the water, ability to swim, a “can do attitude” and should be motivated to learn the skill of sailing a small boat.

What the learner can expect from the course
The learner will get an introduction to the exciting sport of sailing. The course will be mainly practical.
The Boat
The training boats are Laser Pico single handed dinghies. These boats are multiple award-winning sailing dinghies and a popular boat for training centres all over the world. The boats are safe, comfortable and can accommodate up to two people per boat.
The Gear
For the practical training Galway City Sailing Club will provide you with a PFD (Personal Floating Device) for safety. We always have a safety crew in a power boat during the practical training available for your safety.
You need to bring the following:
- Wetsuit
- Wet boots or an old pair of runners
- An old rain jacket.
- Woolly Hat
- Swim Gear
- Shower Gel
- Towel
- Sun blocker
- A positive learning attitude.
